New generation Direct Bonded Magnesia Chrome Refractories from TRL Krosaki for non-ferrous metal industry

Mar. 28, 2020 - The introduction and regulation of strict environmental policies around the world, requiring any new Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, PGM etc. plant to be constructed with higher production capacities and hence the older technology such as blast and reverberatory furnaces, especially those at smaller scales are phasing out. Also, there are continuous degradation of the mineralogy of mining concentrates which increases the challenges further. This will therefore allow for the broadening of new technologies into Non-Ferrous Industry which would also require high performance Refractories.


Pyrometallurgical Process of Non-Ferrous Metal have several process variants and different furnaces are used. The complexity & technological challenges of these metallurgical processes, requires precise knowledge of each individual system for appropriate refractory product selection. Magnesia-Chromite Refractories are the essential refractories for Non-Ferrous furnaces since several years due to its good volume stability against different environments, high corrosion resistance against fayalitic slag, calcium ferrite slag, sodium carbonate/hydroxide slags etc, good spalling resistance and less porous to resist the metal/slag infiltration. For optimizing refractories performance with minimum down time, the judicious selection of refractories is required to suit the requirement of various process stages. To understand and predict the refractory failure-mechanism, both post-mortem investigations and lab scale simulation tests are very much helpful.


TRL Krosaki India have developed a new generation of DBMC refractory that combine an effective infiltration barrier with high resistance to corrosion and thermo-mechanical stress by controlling the pore size distribution & formation of in-situ secondary spinel phases in the matrix. Suitable qualities of tailor-made and special refractories are developed using high purity raw material like, Fused Magnesia, Fused Magnesia-Chrome Clinker, DBM and Chromite with Spinel forming novel additives & adopting the state-of-the-art process Technology. The recent generation products are being commercially manufactured & supplied to various Nonferrous smelters globally with excellent performance records.
