National Aluminium to increase bauxite resource

May 17, 2017 - As leading state-owned producers in metals and mining industries, National Aluminium (hereinafter referred to as Nalco) plans to add about 60 million tons to its aluminium ore (bauxite) resource base by processing overburden at its mines in eastern Odisha state.

Nalco produces about 8.25 million tons annually of bauxite from these mines, which have 207 million tons of available resources. Using the overburden to recover more bauxite resources will not only help Nalco realise its expansion plans. Nalco's third-phase expansion involves establishing a fifth stream with a capacity of one million tons annually  at its alumina refinery in Damanjodi, Odisha state, increasing its total refining capacity to 3.28 million tons annually. The firm aims to establish a fifth stream by 2021.

The company is expected to produce 6.85 million tons of bauxite in the financial year ending 31 March 2017, up from 6.34 million tons a year earlier.
