Tata Steel invest £30 million at its Port Talbot plant

2017-11-29

Nov. 29, 2017 - Tata Steel has revealed a £30 million investment at its Port Talbot plant.

The money will go on a replacement 500-tonne vessel at the Port Talbot steelworks — one of several investments the company said it would be making at its UK sites.

The basic oxygen steelmaking vessel is an 11m high cauldron which converts iron into steel by pumping oxygen through the molten metal at twice the speed of sound, removing unwanted carbon.

The steel is then processed further for use in various products.

Tata Steel project manager Dave Murray said of the new piece of kit: “We have two steelmaking vessels and they run 24/7 at temperatures of up to 1,700C, apart from short planned maintenance periods.

“Despite this they last for around 20 years each and replacing them is an important part of ensuring reliable operations.”

ata Steel said there was a growing demand for new types of steel products in things like electric cars and energy-efficient homes.

One scheme that may use Port Talbot steel is a new development at Wenham Place, Neath, where the 16 new houses and flats will have steel solar roofs to generate electricity and solar heat collectors made of steel to heat water.

The technology has been developed by a Baglan-based research and industrial consortium called Specific, and the aim is to create a new “homes as power stations” sector.

The Wenham Place scheme has planning permission and is being delivered by social housing group Pobl on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council, with Tata to provide the steel subject to procurement. Work could get under way as early as March 2018.

Tata Steel merged with German firm Thyssenkrupp in September to combine their European steel operations in a 50-50 venture. It will lead to some 4,000 job losses.

Nearly 7,000 people are employed by Tata Steel in Wales, including around 4,000 in Port Talbot, and First Minister Carwyn Jones said he has been told that Welsh plants and jobs would be protected.

The Welsh Government has made a £60 million financial aid offer to Tata Steel, conditional on Welsh jobs being protected.
