PAUL WURTH TO REVAMP COKE OVEN GAS TREATMENT PLANT IN KAZAKHSTAN

Apr. 5, 2018 - ArcelorMittal Temirtau recently awarded Paul Wurth with a contract for engineering, equipment supply as well as supervision services for erection and commissioning in relation to the revamping of the Coke Oven Gas Treatment & By-Product Plant at Temirtau works, Kazakhstan. The modernised plant will serve the 6 existing coke oven batteries and will have a COG treatment capacity of 145,000 Nm3/h. The order includes upgrading of the existing tar decanting plant and the supply of a new primary gas cooler, electrostatic tar precipitators, secondary cooler, ammonia scrubbers and ammonia stripping columns, cooling and chilled water plant. The project includes as well the engineering and supply of a modern ammonia cracking / elementary Sulphur plant with stand-by facilities. Part of the scope is the supply of the relevant electrical equipment and instrumentation for the process units. The replacement and upgrade activities will be executed while the coke production and coke oven gas cleaning keep up running. Completion of all the modernisations is foreseen for the third quarter of 2020.

ArcelorMittal is the largest producer in Kazakhstan’s steel and mining sector. The integrated steel plant located in Temirtau has an annual capacity of 4.5 million tons of crude steel and produces hot and cold rolled steel, tin plate, galvanised steel and polymer-coated coils, welded pipes, coke, and chemical by-products.

In the years 2010-2016, three of the ironmaking plant’s four blast furnaces have been rebuilt and modernised in accordance to Paul Wurth’s basic engineering and involving technological key equipment supplied by the company.

Now, this new order from ArcelorMittal Temirtau represents a market breakthrough for Paul Wurth with coke oven gas treatment solutions in the region.
