SEVERSTAL PLACES ORDER FOR NEW COKE MAKING COMPLEX WITH PAUL WURTH

2018-07-31

Jul. 30, 2018 - Severstal and Paul Wurth have recently signed a contract for the construction of a New Coke Making Complex at Severstal’s integrated steel works at Cherepovets in the North-West of Russia. Core parts of the new complex are two brand-new, stamp charged coke batteries, for which Paul Wurth executed the “Project Documentation”, an extended version of Basic Engineering, in the months before. Now, Severstal confirmed its trust in Paul Wurth by placing this consecutive order which covers so-called “Working Documentation”, the Russian version of Detail Engineering , and “Supplies Procurement”, i.e. the supply of Paul Wurth key equipment necessary for guaranteeing the general performance of the new plant, as well as the “Designer’s Supervision” to be provided during the erection works.

Along with the two Coke Oven Batteries (“Block 1” and “Block 2”), Paul Wurth’s technologies and engineering solutions for the New Coke Making Complex will be applied in the three new Coke Dry Quenching Systems, by a complete set of Coke Oven Machines, in ancillaries for coal preparation and coke handling as well as in the Tar Decanting Plant. Paul Wurth’s hardware supplies will include critical and patented equipment and systems such as the coke oven doors, refractories, machines and the SOPRECO® system for single oven pressure control.

The two batteries (2 x 56 coke ovens of 6.25 m height) are designed for a total production of 1.4 million tons of coke. They will be of stamp-charging type and integrate state-of-the-art Paul Wurth coke making technology such as the innovative smokeless charging system.

In a recent statement, Mr Vadim Germanov, the Director of Severstal’s division “Rossiyskaya Stal”, mentioned that "This will be the first Russian coke batteries with a new promising technology, coal charge stamping, allowing us (Severstal) to use cheaper raw material and maintaining the coke quality. Furthermore, we apply strict criteria for protecting the environment, even as early as at the design stage; therefore the contract includes the relevant technological solutions."

The new complex is foreseen to be commissioned by September 2021.
