Tata Steel to invest Rs 700 cr in coke oven plant in WB

KOLKATA: The Tata Iron and Steel Company Ltd today signed an agreement with West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation to set up a merchant coke oven plant at Haldia in East Midnapore.
An agreement to this effect was signed between Tata Steel Chairman and Managing Director, Mr B Muthuraman and Managing Director of WBIDC Mr Gopal Krishna in the presence of Chief Minister Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee and Chairman of Tata Sons Mr Ratan Tata.
Speaking after signing the agreement Mr Muthuraman said the JV company will be called Hooghly Met Coke and Power Company Ltd and the envisaged cost of phase one of the project is around Rs 700 crore. An estimated 0.8 million tonnes of coke and 60 megawatt of power would be produced, he said.
He said the JV company, to be formed and registered shortly, proposes to set up a merchant coke oven plant adapting hit recovery (HR) route.
The company will also generate 60 mw of electricity by utilising sensible heat of the hot flue gas from the coke oven and the power generated by the company will be sold to West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB). - PTI
