Mar. 12, 2019 - Elkem will implement a considerable upgrade of the silicon furnace at Elkem Bremanger in Norway. The upgrade will increase the efficiency and reduce the NOx emissions with up to 50%. The upgrade will cost 259 million Norwegian kroner (NOK). The Norwegian NOx fund supports the project with 90 million NOK.
The furnaces at Elkem Bremanger produces silicon and ferrosilicon. The products from Elkem Bremanger’s silicon production are to be found in solar panels, batteries and mobile phones. In addition to improve efficiency and cut NOx emissions, the project has additional benefits, when it comes to safety standards and work environment.
The upgrade of Furnace 5 will secure our continued specialisation strategy within silicon products, here at Elkem Bremanger. In addition, I am really glad that this will improve the work environment around the furnace, amongst other things reducing dust emissions. This is a very important upgrade, and I am really pleased that we now will start this project, says plant manager Arne Werge-Olsen.
This upgrade contributes to secure our cost position. This investment show the importance of the organisation here in Svelgen, Bremanger. We are now securing the value creation for Elkem Bremanger and the local community, says Werge-Olsen.
Elkem received funding to this project from the Norwegian NOx fund. With the upgrade, the goal is to reduce the emissions with 40% to 50 %. That is the same as 100 000 diesel cars on the road. The NOx fund supports the project with 90 million NOK.
The project at Elkem Bremanger has possibilities to reduce NOx emissions in great scale. We are happy that we can support such a project. This is one of six Elkem-projects that the NOx fund has approved and supported, and Elkem’s commitment to reduce NOx emissions will have significant effect on the total Norwegian emissions, says CEO in the Norwegian NOx fund, Tommy Johnsen.
