RUSAL and TransContainer develop green logistics

Oct. 5, 2021 - RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer and PJSC TransContainer (part of the DELO Group), an intermodal container operator with the largest fleet of containers and fitting platforms in Russia, have signed an agreement of intent on strategic cooperation for low-carbon development in the field of logistics. The signing ceremony was attended by RUSAL’s General Director Evgenii Nikitin and President of PJSC TransContainer Alexander Isurin.

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both companies undertake to jointly develop and implement new low-carbon technologies for the transportation of raw materials and aluminium products through this mutual agreement

The most important pledge within the agreement is RUSAL’s commitment to achieve a net zero balance of carbon emissions at all stages of the life cycle of its products by 2050, and to reduce the level of carbon emissions at the logistics stage by at least 35% by 2030. In addition, RUSAL will continue to popularise low-carbon transport technologies in Russia, with the use of "green" aluminium, and actively participate in discussions, including at the legislative level, on the development of innovative approaches to low-carbon logistics.

For its part, PJSC TransContainer plans to develop a methodology for estimating greenhouse gas emissions from transportation from next year, in accordance with international requirements and verified by an independent auditor. Additionally, the Company will develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 no later than in 2023. Equally, starting from 2022, PJSC TransContainer will provide RUSAL with annual reports on monitoring greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

Commenting on the signed agreement, RUSAL’s General Director Evgenii Nikitin noted: "RUSAL fully recognises the global significance of the climate change problem. Since 2007, we have been consistently reducing the carbon footprint of our products. Thus, the level of direct specific and indirect energy emissions of greenhouse gases during the production of our ALLOW brand aluminium is five times lower than the industry average. At the same time, during the process of primary aluminium production, transportation accounts for about 3% of all greenhouse gas emissions, or about 500 kg of CO2 equivalent per ton of aluminium. This agreement is a significant step towards achieving the net zero target by 2050 and an important development for the Russian aluminium industry."
