HBIS completes the first phase of the hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project

Dec. 16, 2022 - Today, the first phase of the 1.2 million-ton hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project of HBIS Group Zhangxuan High Tech was completed. This project is the world's first hydrogen-rich gas (coke oven gas) direct reduction hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project. This marks a subversive, demonstrative and critical step in the transformation of China's iron and steel industry from traditional "carbon metallurgy" to new "hydrogen metallurgy". It will further lead the transformation of traditional iron and steel metallurgy processes and open a new era of green and low-carbon development.

Compared with traditional carbon metallurgy, hydrogen metallurgy uses hydrogen as fuel and reducing agent, which can free ironmaking from dependence on fossil energy and solve the problem of carbon emissions from the source. "It is foreseeable that the core competitiveness in the fields of steel and energy will gradually change from 'the ability to absorb fossil energy' to 'the ability to reduce carbon and capture carbon and get rid of the shackles of fossil energy' represented by hydrogen metallurgy." The Chairman of HBIS Group Yu Yong said.

Compared with traditional metallurgical processes, the implementation of this project can reduce carbon emissions by 70%, which is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions per ton of steel to about 0.5 tons.
