Sep. 7, 2013 - The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant's (VSP) Blast Furnace-1 (Godavari) is scheduled to undergo category-1 repairs from the last week of this month.
The furnace, which has produced over 35 million tonnes of hot metal since its inception in 1990, is being taken for category-1 repairs for the first time, said a release from Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL).
The blast furnace has an installed capacity of 4,860 tonnes per day, an official said.
The category-1 repairs of the blast furnace indicate a complete revamp of the iron making unit for which it will be shut down for 135 days.
According to RINL, the repairs would be help in increasing the working volume of the furnace from 3200 cubic metres to 3800 cubic metres, improving the productivity and efficiency.
With the capital repairs planned later this month, a two-day workshop on modernisation of furnace technology is being organised to share knowledge on the category-1 repairs. Blast furnace professionals from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) plants, Tata Steel, JSW and also from Siemens, Vesuvius, among others are participating in the workshop.
